Question for you. In regards to the talk we had about the Sage, What does "Sage" mean to you watching this episode?

Here is one of the google definitions (I ignored the ones about plants):

a profoundly wise man, especially one who features in ancient history or legend.
"the sayings of the numerous venerable sages".

In Light Novels and Anime, Sages are also known for being in control of all elements (A story I read, The Great Cleric, has Sages as beings capable of controlling all elements).

So in our Story, A sage could be a person of great wisdom (Merlin from Arthurian legend), or a person capable of controlling the elements (The sage legend speaks of him controlling the rain).

So when we put these together, Which does Kaina lean more towards? He has knowledge of letters (the Signkeeper in Canopy taught him), he can see the "green creature", and he carries knowledge of technology lost to the surface (his airtight suit, his oxygen mask, even his harpoon gun).

So the conversation about Kaina being "A disciple of the Sage" can be regarded as true. Kaina has a great deal of wisdom he could bring to the Surface with his ability to read alone.

It seems like the Sage's greatest wisdom was preserving the written word. Think about why the anime went with "Metal Signs":

1. When compared to other physical media (Think Paper, Papyrus, Stone Tablets), Metal signs will not break down as easily (Paper will fade or discolor, similar to the other examples).
2. If you keep Metal signs out of the wind and rain (something easy to do in Canopy), they will survive much longer.

Think about the traffic signs, or even the paint on the highway road you drive. What wears them down over the years? The elements of Wind and Water. Even the Grand Canyon was made with the power of Water and Time.

The wisdom of the Sage may be something as simple as leaving a disciple that could read the clues, and guide what is left of humanity to its own salvation.

XD

Dazed • 1 year ago

It most likely refers to the person that can rekindle the knowledge that has been lost.

Porthya • 1 year ago

Sage is almost a complete synonym for wise man; sometimes it does apply to magic users, but overall, it just refers to people of vast knowledge and the go to scholar of a community. The herb/plant got the same name because it's very versatile in its medicinal uses and thus metaphorically symbolises a wealth of knowledge. So, yes, Kaina being taught to read and be interested in/aware of knowledge encoded in writing would make him a potential sage or their disciple. I feel there might be some mechanism/device/piece of lost technology somewhere deep inside the sea, or intel about the small creature only Kaina and Ririha have seen and that's where they might find a solution, but the intel itself could be encoded in writing, much like Koushi's situation with the fiends in Hikari no Ou.

Merlin and Jesus are the most commonly known (Western) sages. Sages primary duty is to guide the unseen path. Not specifically to be a mage.

It looks like our naive only-child is guiding.

Solomon Whyman • 1 year ago

Jesus is from Israel- Middle-East, not West.

Furthermore to quote C.S. Lewis:

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish things that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of thing Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would rather be a lunatic -- on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg -- or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God...But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."

Gizmo 2024 • 1 year ago

Don't be dense. You know exactly what Western means in this context.

Let me guess: "Australia isn't Western either. It's Eastern... it just happened to randomly have Judeo-Christian foundation and geopolitics. You know. Like magic."

Grandpa Lampshade • 1 year ago

My only problem with this is that we're at episode 5 of an anime that's slated for 11 episodes and we really don't even know much about how this world works. Also the plot isn't exactly moving forward quickly. With only six more episodes left I have a bad feeling we're either getting the "leave you hanging for another season that never comes" route or they're going to just rush and cram everything into the last couple of episodes.

Goosie🦆 • 1 year ago

This should really be 24 episodes at least

Grandpa Lampshade • 1 year ago

The pace they're taking with this would be just about right for 24 episodes

karn44 • 1 year ago

There is going to be a movie that continues where the anime will leave off after this season finishes.

Grandpa Lampshade • 1 year ago

Ah! I didn't know that. Now we can expect cliffhanger-kun for the final episode.

Porthya • 1 year ago

Maybe it ends with the appearance of that weird "giant" from the OP, with the one glowing eye...

Muczkapl • 1 year ago

Ahhh it's a shame we didn't get into the meat and potatoes yet but just tasted the sauce for now.
Man this show is so fucking good, also good to know that Kaina has 20/20 vision lol. Honestly they should've given him binuculars or something instead but okay I guess.

Porthya • 1 year ago

How does one taste the sauce without the meat and potatoes? I always drizzle sauce onto them to amp up their taste 🤔

the Finance Guy • 1 year ago

It seems Kaina have very good vision. The sea snow acts more like a gas than a liquid. That might explain why there was so little drag when Kaina and the prince were flying while attached to that creature and the crash landing was so violent. It also explains why the creatures move like planes instead of a sea creatures. We also got more details of how those air berries work. Look like they do eventually run out of air. Good episode over all.

Porthya • 1 year ago

Idk who made the music, but some themes sound so much like Eurielle's songs.
Such a d*ck move to kill the messenger...I have a feeling red-head( Amerote/Amerope?) will end the guy as she might already be realising her people are wasteful with resources...? Or maybe for a different reason. She seems to enjoy and respect Ririha's cleverness, admire Orinaga's swordsmanship, and be wary of the admiral's behaviour. She's as whimsically mysterious as Sakamoto's character in NnT( Merlin)

Dazed • 1 year ago

She better be hanging there dead as a sign of dread.

It better not be 'Wait, let's just hang her outside, bc I feel like changing up the way I murder people today.'

Ha, but the answer is already a given.

Porthya • 1 year ago

No, she's clearly alive, he's sadistic enough to want to give her a slow death owed to exposure and preserve her slowly decaying corpse as a sign of dread( like the slowly executed pirate prisoners in POTC). That's what those cages are technically meant for, to slowly expose people to the elements save for big starving prey birds or similarly big necrophages who would kill and clear the victim off fast. If it's only smaller creatures who can get to the person inside, it would make their death slow and more torturous.

Dazed • 1 year ago

Sounds amazing as a way to really amp up the dark tones. But she'll be out before she even properly realizes what she was put into.

Yasir Amin • 1 year ago

That was dangerous hook on fish..what if it went different way.....that fist bump was cool

Diabolicism • 1 year ago

Im half expecting it to be her dead body, when they get to it.
Ive seen some dark ass plot twists. Ugh.

Hope shes alive and not just a newly made mast post. >.>

Porthya • 1 year ago

No, those cages like the one she's placed in are usually meant for slow torturous killing( most often through exposure to the elements), then slow decay of a victim's corpse as part of a dread flag strategy.

Diabolicism • 1 year ago

Did they show it in another part of the episode?
I couldn't get a detailed look of it at the ending part; just something that vaguely looked cage-ish & a tuft of blond.
Are you using knowledge of sea warfare to fill in what the scene is?

Porthya • 1 year ago

When they showed Kaina's pov it was a clearer image, it was her whole silhouette, not just a tuft of blond, you could even distinguish that scale-like design on the bottom of her tunic, and the cage usage isn't restricted to sea "warfare", it's a medieval device for slow death, the POTC example was just a reference to a very popular piece of fiction many people around might know, and thus recall how the thing was used there. Just look up "hanging cage". Ofc, crossed with "medieval torture", so that you don't have to deal with unnecessary bird-keeping related results.
I took another look, and if you pause at 20:56, you can see she's bound and locked in a cage lifted up at the top of the mast doubling-up as gallows, look above her and you'll even see the white pulley they used to lift it up.

Damn, the chapters feel so short, I always end longing for more.

For the ones wondering what will happen with the series, being so few chapters long, it will have a movie sequel.

Good episode

LORD ALEXANDER • 1 year ago

This shit it's getting boring as fk and pretty lame..why put so much fighting if the mc it's a coward? why don't go in the adventure and mistery direction with little action :(

ID get it at all

the Finance Guy • 1 year ago

He wasn't a coward in this episode. He was calm and took risk in this episode. Unfortunately he got knocked unconscious before he reached the negotiation. That isn't what a coward would do.

LORD ALEXANDER • 1 year ago

pretty damn coward with some intelligence i give to him and that's wall..like no fighting and everything is pretty lame and coward..it's in an apocalyptic word..were you need to fight for survival of your people..negotiations are like the last thing you need to think...

So the whole point of getting there only to negotiate is dumb as fk.. he don't even has some sort of strength in anything maybe on climbing:)

the Finance Guy • 1 year ago

No idea what you just wrote

Makaveli Musolini • 1 year ago

lol no one does. can't write for shit nor does he make any sense.

Porthya • 1 year ago

Child, go back to poorly written shounens where the MC exists only to bludgeon others to death...though Idk which one that would be, even the most generic Japanese ones still get their MCs thinking and displaying Kaina's level of maturity once in a while.

This is one of the VERY FEW CGI anime that I won't hate on. The story has been very good so far. I can't wait to see what comes next.
